Day 5 - Tyndrum to Glencoe
After quite a nice sleep we had breakfast in our hut before Julie's brother David arrived. He came driving up from Glasgow to join us on today's stretch.
Plan was to take this longest hike in 3 parts with pit stops inbetween. First leg to Bridge of Orchy.
Soon after leaving Tyndrum we walked along the steep sides of Beinn Odhar with the pyramid of Beinn Dorain ahead, a companion all the way across the floor of the glen until we reached Bridge of Orchy. Julie and David arrived first and enjoyed their sandwiches outside with refreshments from the hotel bar.
Sharon and Gry arrived a bit later after a couple of stops for checking blisters and chatting to other hikers.
Not too pleased with the service in the bar as they prioritized inside guests and didn't want to hear our wishes 😕
After our break Gry did the sensible thing as she was tired and finding the path rough going took the bus to Glencoe. A free bus ride even! And the scenery is amazing also through a bus window 🤩
Gry found our cabin "Munro" at Glencoe Mountain Resort and got the transported luggage down ready for the happy hikers to arrive later. Also put the heater on as it started with rain and wind outside.
The route to Bridge of Orchy inpart follows the Old Military Road. A short climb up the hill gave a dramatic viewpoint across Loch Tulla and the Black Mount. Beyond Inveroran, the path crosses Rannoch Moor via a Thomas Telford road, built when the military roads constructed after the 1745 Jacobite rebellion began to fall into disrepair and traffic had begun to increase in the Highlands
Rannoch Moor is a wild and remote section of the West Highland Way so extra care needs to be taken, especually if the conditions change - as they did! Driving rain and wind at one of the most remote spots - was a stark reminder that people have died on the West Highland Way and, more generally, that you need to take care, and the right equipment, in the Scottish Highlands.
Ba Bridge is halfway across the moor and an obvious rest point to take in the views, though it was pretty bleak.
Towards the Glencoe Mountain Resort where we have accommodation for the night, the WHW branches off to the right, and an Old Military Road takes the high road!
Probably the hardest day yet, and not for the faint-hearted.
